Mary Kay Hoal, Founder of Yoursphere, and a repeat guest of CHWR, is a prime example of a parent who recognized early the need to do something, and provided a safe digital environment for children to participate. The Internet is a tool, and a very powerful tool that has changed the perception of social interaction. The Star Trek episode of the “Borge” and the “Collective’s” mission to assimilate the galaxies comes to mind. Is the Internet assimilating all of us?

A bit of interesting information that Mary Kay pointed out is the past growth of different media over time:

1. Radio: Thirty-eight (38) years to reach an audience of fifty million (50,000,000).
2. TV: Fourteen (14) years to reach an audience of fifty million (50,000,000).
3. Internet: Four (4) years to reach an audience of fifty million (50,000,000).
4. iPod: Three (3) years to reach an audience of fifty million (50,000,000).
5. Social Networks: Nine months to reach an audience of One-Hundred Million (100,000,000).

No wonder Marty Kohler, a Federal and criminal defense attorney, and a previous guest of CHWR said, we could not keep up with technology. There has been a paradigm shift in how kids, including adults socialize. However, adults do distinguish between the digital world and the physical world. The New Net-Generation, and kids’ current digital lives, both their digital and physical worlds coincide together, and are seamlessly incorporated into his or her daily life with no distinction between the two.

As Mary Kay pointed out the Internet was created by and for adults. No one considered the Internet as a place for children to socialize, nor become subject to all the perversions, which as a society we try to protect them from, and all the misconduct, along with the lack of parental guidance that followed.

Teenagers love to have fun, discuss different things with their friends or even newly found friends on the Internet. They always want to discover so many thing about what’s hot and what’s not in blogs, forums and even chat rooms.

There are so many teenagers who dwell into these things since they find browsing the internet as a necessity. Aside from they do it for fun, hobby or leisure, they also use the internet for their home works, requirements and to grasp some useful ideas for their daily lives. But what should teenagers do whenever they engage themselves in chatting and forums?

Should there be teen guidelines to follow?

Teenagers are so liberated nowadays that they tend to forget some of the values…

They don’t even anymore apply it while browsing the internet, as long as they have fun and meet new people then that are it. When using the different Web Sites, teens get to interact with so many people who actually share the same interest as theirs.

Nevertheless, when these people are not very well guarded and not informed by the proper netiquette, then they could be in trouble.

Think It Won’t Happen To You?

Basically, it’s always good to remember to have respect and courtesy while using the forums or blog commenting. Many users get to here foul words and as to protect themselves, they use foul words over that person too, which is wrong. As a person who has the proper values and education should not dwell into these kinds of conversation and should learn how to respect each other’s post, talk about freedom of expression.

Second, if teens do not want to be abused in the first place then avoid using objectionable, obscene, or malicious usernames. Other people could actually see it and nowadays, some people judge other individuals immediately when they use malevolent usernames. Lastly, it is very important not only for teens but other users too to handle their personal information with care. See to it that usernames and passwords are well kept in a safe place.

These are just some of the teen guidelines needed to be followed when using the internet. People should always know their limitations since everything has rules including the internet.

CHW came across this video and had to share it with everyone who has ever taken a shot at being an entrepreneur, especially Internet entrepreneurs.

Anyone who has spent time building an Internet business understands the massive amount of new media information, which engulfs you. It can be stifling to say the least.

Sad to say there are real reasons why we need watch what we say, and especially in an Airport….

I’ve got a plane full of people saying you threatened that stewardess.

I was not threatening her. I was trying to get my bag into the overhead storage thing.
You were acting like a maniac, and you threatened her with a bomb!
– I said I didn’t have a bomb! – You said “bomb.”
– I said, “It’s not like I have a bomb.” – You said “bomb” on an airplane.
– What’s wrong with saying “bomb” on an airplane? – You can’t say “bomb.”

Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb! You gonna arrest me?

- You assaulted an airline employee– – What if I was a bombardier?
– I got enough to put you away for a few years! – Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb!

BUT now you NEED to watch what you say everywhere… and more than ever, what you say Online!!!

Just because we (you and I) think it’s OK to just say anything we want, on the World Wide Web… and we’re going to be protected by Constitution… and (GET Away with IT) well you better think again the RULES are changing and they should have changed a long time ago… better late than never, I suppose… So, you better take speak the TRUTH… a few minutes of time to read or listen to the story of Sue Scheff… your not going to believe what happened to her and her life over the past few years… it shocking to say the least!!!
