How would you feel if the web stopped being so free and independent? I’m concerned freaked right the heck out about the bills that threaten to do this, and as a participant in one of the biggest changes in modern history, you should be, too.

Stop SOPA | PIPA! Please…I implore you! Continue Reading Only This Once…If Never Again.

What I am about to say, I may never have the freedom to say again…More about why in just a second.

It was Tuesday, 11:00am, Raj Goel was on CHWRadio with Dave & Bill, and we were discussing Net Neutrality and SOPA.

Immediately the next day, Wednesday, I read the following public statement regarding the official WordPress project’s position on SOPA and PIPA. Breaking a silence of a no-politics rule.

Only after taking the time to read this will, you be privy to what is unfolding before you – right now – concerning the democratization of publishing and the independent web.

Many of our rights and freedoms are balancing in the wings.

Between Raj Goel’s interview and reading, the following public statement made on behalf of the official WordPress project, which speaks volumes, you will become empowered to make an informed decision.

According to WordPress, “We are not a small group. More than 60 million people use WordPress — it’s said to power about 15% of the web. We can make an impact, and you can be an agent of change.”

“Today, I’m breaking our no-politics rule, because there’s something going on in U.S. politics right now that we need to make sure you know about and understand, because it affects us all.”

Following is the WordPress News statement; Wednesday, January 10, 2012 regarding SOPA/PIPA…I implore you to read WordPress’s short post and watch the video. Only then will you understand the magnitude of what is happening that will affect us all.

It begs the question I have posted and asked before…”Whose Internet is it?”

Within less than a week The CyberHood Watch was hit with 2 very disturbing cases of SEXting… and, we believe that this problem is growing and not going away any time soon! We were contacted and asked to give our advice, of how to best help both of these people.

Case one, the ex-spouse: our office was contacted by an ex-spouse having issues of their spouse posting semi-nude photos taken while they were married. For whatever reason because of a bad breakup the spouse felt that it was okay to post this image online! Our advice was to contact the hosting provider and let them know that the image needed to be taken down, then we said a screenshot needed to be taken for proof (evidence) and then the police needed to be contacted and a report needed to be filed so there was a record of the harassment, sexting or this type of offence can only be prosecuted with the right evidence and under the right laws which could be stalking and/or harassment laws.

Case two, 16 yr old girl: a mother called our office and was desperate to find help for her daughter who was being stalked and harassed with nude images and videos she had taken 2 years earlier with a boy. At the time they had been boyfriend and girlfriend and were dating. The young girl was 14 at the time the photos were taken, but had forgotten about it until the ex-boyfriend began extortion tactics with the sexual images and videos. Our advice to the mother was to contact an attorney (Robin Sax) who lived in her region and that we have had on our CHWR show before to get prompt legal advice, because the boy had given her an ultimatum and a 24 hour time limit to make up her mind! As well we recommended that she contact our friends, at the NWCAT.org to find out what some of her other options might be, getting help for her child!

This type of extortion is called SEXtortion and is becoming one of the fastest growing crimes and real tragedies of participating in SEXting with anyone. Please young people and even married couples who are taking pictures or making videos, there are no guarantees that someday the relationship won’t end and then you are left with objects that can be used as EXTORTION, blackmail or used in court against you when having custody issues!! Oh by the way, both victims were being harassed by cybercriminals using Facebook as the platform for stalking…

We at the CyberHood Watch teach others to think before you CLICK, and in this day and age PLEASE, please imagine how your life can be ruined with nude images and/or videos that can be distributed to everyone via the internet, just ask any one of the hundreds of celebrities that have had this happen to them in the past 2 decades, they claim any press even bad press is GOOD… but for just a regular person everything that is bad press is just that bad press!! And a real mess you can’t get out from under, without some major consequences!

SEXting – Naughty Texting, is sending racy ‘sexts’ flirting and/or nude images that could be considered porn!!

Once sent these images are now available to everyone. Anyone has the ability to share that imaige with others! Please don’t let your children ruin their lives forever!

Once a child losses his or her Innocence…it’s gone! Educate yourself and your children, especially before it’s too LATE and the photo’s or blog content has been posted!

Via Wikipedia: The first known published mention of the term “sexting” was in a 2005 article in the Sunday Telegraph Magazine.

In a 2008 survey of 1,280 teenagers and young adults of both sex’s on Cosmogirl.com sponsored by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 20% of teens (1-20) and 33% of young adults (20-26) had sent nude or semi-nude photographs of themselves electronically. Additionally, 39% of teens and 59% of young adults had sent sexually explicit text messages. Read more

Though youth is fleeting, images sent on a cell phone or posted online may not be, especially if they’re naughty.

Social networking has really turned into a big thing over the last decade, with Facebook currently the big player in the market. Many children have a Facebook page – official Facebook rules means you need to be 13 to have a Facebook page. However many children under 13 have an account and children as young as 8 appear to have them.

CyberBullying – what forms can it take?

Repeated unwanted messages, remember that it may be not be on Facebook. Texts messages, e mails, message boards can be used to make repeated threatening messages. Also remember it may not be threatening messages it can just be an attempt by the bully to run your child down. Many bullies act as though they are the child’s friend but bully when they have the opportunity.

What can you do about cyberbullying?

First you need to sit your child down and get them to tell you everything that is going on. There are many options available. You can take people off your friends list on Facebook and block them.

This means they will not be able to message them or see any of their activity. This may not be final however, it could turn into bullying offline or they could use a different friend’s account to continue to bully. Monitor closely what is happening with your child’s computer.

Facebook and other social networking sites are easily available through mobile phones nowadays so keep a close eye on this also.

Other tactics used by bullies.

Other tactics bullies sometimes use is to post upsetting messages on other peoples Facebook pages such as, your child’s friend, meaning they will see the message. Blocking them will stop this however your child may be told about this by others.

If the level of bullying moves up to this level or shows no sign of stopping, it’s time to talk to the school and considering contacting the parents of the bully. Contacting parents of the bully should be done carefully, remember it’s possible their bullying behavior is picked up from the parents.

Impersonation

Bullies can pretend to be the victim on chat rooms and basically embarrass them, this can be a really destructive type of bullying as the victim does not know what has been said and is the victim of jokes and talk behind their back.

Many bullies use this tactic to turn other people against them, changing or creating messages to turn them against them.

Bullying can get worse as other children want to be part of the group which leads to the situation getting worse.

Co-Founder, Marc Maiffret is back as CTO of eEye. The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, talked about the value of Marc’s new perspective that he is bringing back to eEye after several years of contributing to the industry elsewhere.

Marc understands that modern societies will become increasingly dependent on technology, not just as something nice to have, but as a foundation for a way of life. However, along with the technology dependency, people like Marc who understand the vulnerabilities individuals and societies are facing, are the defenders of our personal and national security. Personal, corporate, national, and international entities are all subject to cyber threats, exposing our children, families, and businesses while making them vulnerable to the digital threats from cybercriminals.

Marc Maiffret On CHWradio

The truth is we have no choice…The Internet is here and it is so much a part of our daily lives that there is no disconnect, plug to pull, or switch to turn it off. The CyberHood Watch appreciates individuals like Marc who are tireless defenders of our cyber security.

We have laid the golden egg…The Internet. Unfortunately, everyone and every entity connected to the Internet are its treasures and valuable resources. Each entity connected to the Internet provides nefarious organizations potential access to personal information, and financial wealth. In addition there are many who are concerned about the security of the nation form those who seek world domination or the destruction of nations.

Too often, I have stated as well as heard, “we are always a step and a half behind the hacker”. Good news, according to Marc, understanding the aspects of the life cycle of attacks, allows us to get a jump ahead of the bad guys. The nefarious entities are all scrambling to find the vulnerabilities in the systems or a way to socially engineer individuals to trigger a behavioral response. However, if we focus on the basic commonalities in penetrating a system, and find it first, we have a chance of staying ahead of the hackers allowing Marc, to patch and deny access to hackers with bad intentions. One thing is for sure; it is a never ending battle 24/7, 365 days a year. As Marc said, “It is a continuous sprint with no finish line in sight”.

Thank you Marc Maiffret, as well as all our guests we have had on CHWradio who strive to make the digital age safe for all children, families, and businesses.

I Love An Intellectual Challenge - Lets Match Wits

Marc loves the intellectual challenge and matching wits with the nefarious hackers. However; be mindful there are the counterparts to Marc, who are well funded by criminal organizations, racing Marc to discover the same vulnerabilities in the system.

Graham Cluley, from Sophos, raised the question in his blog post about hiring hackers who have turned good, one of whom was appointed to Homeland Security. The concern is we might be sending a message of approval for individuals, in order to obtain a position of importance; you have to become a notable hacker of the system to prove your worthiness.

The concern is we are approving the negative behavior of hackers to catch a hacker, likened to hiring a notorious bank robber to guard the bank. Probably the reason, as Marc pointed out, that large reputable companies shy away from public association with their employed white hat hackers…It takes one to one.

Here is a tip from Marc regarding new types of hacks currently occurring, and that is if you maintain a balance on your iTunes account or similar account – Don’t, hackers have recently penetrated iTunes, and are draining those accounts balances.

Some believe it is dramatic and too much of a noble claim when you say you are fighting for a way of life. Consider how technology is becoming embedded in our lives, automobiles, smart grid, smart phones, etc., and you begin to understand how individuals like Marc are fighting for our way of life. Be sure to listen to Marc’s story about penetrating a water plant and the implications that presents to all our municipality’s safety.

Be sure to download the entire interview, Marc shares a great deal of insight to what is necessary to maintain a safe presence in the digital age. Moreover, the landscape has changed and what were simple recommendations to stay safe (and still applicable) on the Internet have been expanded to identify the risks you have no control over.

Listen to internet radio with Dave and Bill on Blog Talk Radio

Allow me to leave you with this thought from Marc regarding the “The Explosion”. The explosion is when the access and the data come together for the smart phone, and it becomes the complete replacement for the wallet. The smart phone replaces your driver’s license, replaces your credit card, ID card, payment options, etc. When this happens, it all becomes very worthwhile for the hacker. A previous guest, Winn Schwartau, sees it as the “perfect storm” in 2013, when there will be approximately four billion connections to the Internet, the majority of which will be the smart phone, and in the hands of children.

Thanks again Marc, for sharing your time with Dave & Bill on CHWradio.

Ron Stevenson stopped by the HOOD today and shared with all our followers, members and live radio listeners about their fantastic new product and service called: GoGoStat.com Parental Guidance Facebook App.

As Ron opened the show and shared with us a staggering fact that 60% of kids today are on social media, so folks this is huge, and only getting bigger… Be aware that this is real and by 2013 there will be almost 4.5 billion users connecting to the internet through the broadband channel called the World Wide Web!

Because the boy had been planted with a seed from his parents about honesty from his namesake the grandfather, Maurice had that value of honesty ingrained in him. THAT is planting a seed in him.

Now that we’ve talked about planting, we need to look at what planting is, exactly. What are some of the things parents do to plant seeds in their children? Here is an example.

In the Robinson family, a child was named after his grandfather Maurice. The parents taught Maurice (the child) that his grandfather was so honest that he wouldn’t even take a paper clip from his office to use at home. And he never spoke to anyone at work unless absolutely necessary so that he was not being paid for something that was not work. And in the home, he would not even take any food at the table until everyone had their portion, for fear that he might be eating someone else’s food. You could imagine the picture of honesty that was created in the child’s mind.

When the Maurice was about 8 years old. He was walking down the street with 3 of his friends. Ahead of him, an unpopular boy in their class dropped his pencil on the ground. All the boys went for that pencil, but Maurice got it first. And what was the first thing he did? He returned the pencil to the boy, despite the fact that the other boys didn’t want him to, and jeered at Maurice for doing such a thing, rather than going with the attitude of “finders keepers losers weepers”. When one boy asked him why he did that, he said “because my name is Maurice”

Because the boy had been planted with a seed from his parents about honesty from his namesake the grandfather, Maurice had that value of honesty ingrained in him. THAT is planting a seed in him.

Seeds can be planted through:

1.	explanation
2.	example
3.	praise/encouragement
4.	scolding/punishment
5.	doing it yourself
6.	establish the environment for the child
7.	introduce the child to other people or children
8.	show or tell the child something

Every time you plant a seed through your actions, you always need to ask yourself: “What kind of plant do I want to grow within my child”. A huge responsibility of parenthood lies in that anything you do today will sprout the plants of tomorrow within your child.

What we plant (SOW) with our children, we REEP… in all of our Futures!

Learn IT, DO IT, Teach IT, Share IT

The Hidden Dangers Affecting Children, Families, Businesses, and Society In The Digital Age!

Back To Basics - Face-To-Face

It is not much different than when; Bill and I began talking about certain events (Choking Game, Cyber Bullying, Sexting, etc.), that were taking place on the Internet and we got the look of deer in the headlights. For Dr. Mack R Hicks, author of “The Digital Pandemic” to address that we are in danger of losing that face-to-face relationship and that we ought to be concerned about the well-being of our children and their families might get the same expression of the later mentioned deer.

The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, tried to recognize risky behaviors early, which were occurring on the Internet and tried to be the Paul Revere to warn our communities through our web sites. Not so much different than Dr. Mack R Hicks, who has recognized a potential hidden danger children, as well as adults, may be involved with and unaware of the dangers?

Maybe It's Time To Disconnect And Re-Think The Digital Age!

Dr. Mack pointed out that we and specifically children may be serving the needs of technology rather than technology serving the needs of the people. Moreover, we may be doing this at the expense of losing personal motivation, creative abilities, and becoming passive learners. This is a concept that Bill and I have alluded to many times. We are so wrapped up in the moment with the “aweness” of technologies that our blinders prevent us from recognizing its potential “hidden dangers”. These dangers are not the obvious ones like Cyber Bullying, Sexting, and many others, but the overall behavioral effects of our children consumed in the digital machines, as Dr. Mack describes in The Digital Pandemic.

Dr. Mack R. Hicks is a neuropsychologist who founded a not-for-profit center and 14 Center Academy schools, including the first school for dyslexics in England. Dr. Mack practiced as a licensed psychologist for over 30 years. Dr. Mack has recognized that the current steady diet of technology is altering the behavior of children, and believes the process is affecting our children’s brains. Technology is altering the family and the face-to-face relationships needed for healthy developmental relationships with peers, and within the family. Mack urges everyone to reevaluate their technology use and consider the family first and how technology can best serve the family and not the other way around. Maybe it is time to disconnect and regroup.

How Much Is Too Much?

Children are being stimulated and not being motivated, which in the long run affects their goals and the future development of human relationships. According to Dr. Mack we need to take a look at our dependency on all things digital. We are becoming too dependent on our computers, smart phones, IM’s, and email messages, and losing the face-to-face relationships that afford us that human touch.

When, I mentioned the Sixth Sense project demonstrated at the “Ted” conference and the technology demonstrated, which is considered the beginnings of real time information, Dr. Mack, pointed out that even as great as the Sixth Sense was it couldn’t provide the warmth, the firmness, nor the touch of the human handshake. We must remember that technology needs to serve us and not consume us and our family relationships.

Dr. Mack pointed out that we need to focus on the family first and then add the technology, not as the focal point but, as a secondary tool to assist the family and our lifestyles. If we maintain our present course serving technology, we may run the chance of becoming more and more dependent, which may lead to obsessive behavior and even addiction.

Like, I indicated in the beginning, Bill and I have made every effort to communicate with our communities and help them to become aware of the hidden dangers children, families, and businesses face in the Digital Age. The same holds true of what Dr. Mack Hicks is communicating with all of us, and that is we need to recognize the hidden dangers of being plugged in to the digital “matrix”. It is an awareness Dr. Mack is communicating with all of us, and the potential long term affects that total blind indulgence in the digital machines may have on our children, families, businesses, and our society in the future.

A phrase I coined seems to apply here: “Does the future of the Internet (Digital Age) belong to our children or does the future of our children belong to the Internet (Digital Age)?”

Click here to watch an interesting TV interview with Dr. Mack R. Hicks.

More often than you think some parents possess the skills to develop software that will keep their children safe in the Digital Age. Such is the case with Jacob Anderson who developed KidsEmail.org and MyKidsBrowser.com because of what occurred with his niece. It was then, Jacob decided that will not happen with my child. Fortunately, nothing seriously happened to his brother's daughter, but it was a hard realization of what almost happened. The rest of us parents are the beneficiaries of what Jacob has developed. If you had the skills to build a product to protect your child wouldn't it be the best you could do?

Kids Email

The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, have interviewed several guests whose passion stems from making sure their child or a loved one’s child is protected. The inspiration for Jacob Anderson for creating KidsEmail.org, was knowing what almost happened to his brother’s daughter. Jacob’s brother discovered someone, unknown to him, had been communicating with his niece, although nothing had happened, it was a realization of what could have occurred.

Parents need to understand that all it takes is a “hello” to start the process. Thanks to people like Jacob, it ignited a passion to make sure it would never happen to his child. Fortunately, every parent there after benefits from Jacobs efforts.

I found this comment on Jacob Anderson’s Blog, which provides an interesting perspective and importance of being able to document your child’s email activities.

When A Child Goes Missing...

“When a child goes missing, one of the first things parents and the police do is go through the child’s emails and social networking accounts.”

Why would any parent not want a trail to follow? Why would a parent wait until their child is missing to know about his or her child’s online activity? It is more common than you think for parents not to know what their kids are doing online.

Jacob also noted that it does not need to be a concern just about predators communicating with your child. There is the very real and current problem with cyberbullying and your knowing early will better serve your child.

At a lecture I recently attended, Dr. Adam Schwebach spoke about, “How to talk to your teen about cell phone safety”. A point highlighted by Dr. Schwebach was the number one tip kids have to say about what parents can do… Don’t Freak Out! Several of our guests have echoed the same… Freaking out and kids thinking they are going to lose computer privileges is one, if not, the top reason for not telling their parents when there is a problem.

As Dr. Adam suggests, there are four things to remember as the parent:

Talk rationally

Be matter of fact

Don’t judge

Talk openly about the potential dangers of cyber space/cell phone use

There are moments when I can say, I am out of touch with raising young children. I have five and the youngest is twenty-three, but that is not to say they did not experience the early years of the Internet, emailing, and the flood of pornography. I think the advantage I had was teaching them as I was learning myself. There was actually a time when I did know more than my kids about the beginnings of the digital age. It was easier… I knew how to check their history; they didn’t think I knew; that lasted a short while.

KidsEmail.org offers a fully developed system, which allows parents a platform to secure their child’s email activities. Now is the time, when your child is young, for parents to grow accustom with the service while their child learns. By the time, your child reaches fourteen he or she will want to move on to the current browsers allowing unrestricted access to the Internet. However, that should not discard having monitoring software in place. Again, your child at fourteen needs parenting; they are not bullet proof from the harms of the Internet, nor its deceptions.

There are great features available with KidsEmail.org for parents to keep their children safe as they begin to participate in the digital age. Technophobic parents have nothing to worry about; KidsEmail.org will help you out along with a MyKidsBrowser to provide you with the parental tools necessary for the digital age parent.

Following are some recommendations Jacob offers to parents (27:33):

Parents fear of technology – Do nothing – Hope their child is okay

Children should learn about the Internet is a safe environment like the home

Place the computer is a public space – more effective when they are young

Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Google Internet filters and install an Internet filter

Set time limits and install kids browsers on your computer

The #1 recommendation is communication with your child!

The latter recommendations are not perfect, but they are a good solid defense for keeping children safe while they become responsible cybercitizens.

We continued our interview talking about more key issues facing kids and parents, along with some more great tips. Be sure to listen to the entire interview with Jacob Anderson here:
