And when I say that I mean, like actually looking and wondering what the kids are doing socially on the internet.

Many kids have their own laptops, and/or computers, most of their parents don’t exactly know what they are doing, saying, talking to, and if they are safe or not.

I have my own laptop that my school has provided for my homework, and personal use. Some of the things they do not allow on it include: E-Mail (other than the they provided for us), Most games, Facebook, and things like MySpace.

I would agree on most of the things other than E-Mail and some of the games, and my reason for that is, now a days most kids have their own E-Mail and Facebook accounts.

Some of the reasons I would think kids under the age of 13 should not have a Facebook account is: Online Predators, harassment, and things that include, hurting and luring them into something they would have never thought they would do or even say.

A few months back, my friend/Classmate had gotten a Facebook account and had had it hacked. The person who had hacked it was unknown and was posting things that should not have been posted, on his and his Friends’ pages. The person who hacked it had just said some rude and un-kind things. I would think that my friend would have gotten away from Facebook but he just made a new account, and luckily this one wasn’t hacked.

Although, not all kids have a Facebook, they either have an E-Mail, or social networking page, or something that involves chatting, IMing, or e-mailing. I myself have an e-mail, although I do get Spam most of the time. Spam is another thing us kids get involved in. Sometimes us kids Click on the spam and see things we really did not want to see. I have dealt with this myself, thinking it’s something cool, but it ends up to not be as fun as we thought.

Being a Cyber-Kid, isn’t just about being “Safe”, we have to use that “Saftey Smarts“. And when I say that I mean, like actually looking and wondering what the kids are doing socially on the internet.

Being under 13, and having multiple social media and networking sites, is maybe not the best idea. Even having one can be a nightmare. So my advice for ALL Cyber-Kids is to listen to your parents and follow the rules of your Home! Your parents love you and they are just helping you to be safe online, so you don’t get into trouble that could change your life forever!!

The GOOD

I was watching the morning drive today on the Golf Channel… and they announced a very cool contest that everyone who wants to can participate, and you can feel what it would be like to be a Wall Street investor, and it is free to enter and you know me… FREE is good

Get Ready for the biggest, richest Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge ever!

So, to read more and enter… See you on the other side.

The BADD

Irene: Wet, Deadly And Expensive As Cleanup Begins

The death toll from the storm rose to 35 as residents of mid-Atlantic and Northeast states began assessing the damage wrought by the destructive storm. Millions were still without power, and torrential floodwaters threatened towns in Vermont and elsewhere…

Our hearts goes out to the families of those lost in this terrible storm, and with all the reports coming in we’re hearing that it could have been much, much worse!

and…

The UGLY

We received an email request/question today see below, and it’s one of the most discussed topic’s in security when it comes to personal online security and PC and mobile or smartphone safety…

Hi. I’ve received an email from ‘PayPal’ stating that they cannot reply to my request – whatever that was – and that I should log in to contact them. I never made a request therefore I am ‘scared’ to log in incase my login is being monitored. My point is that PayPal do not provide a means to contact them which doesn’t involve logging in. Even phoning you have to log in first to obtain a pin number. THat approach has got to be wrong and plays in to the ‘harvesters’ hands. Any ideas how I can urgently contact them…

We had a couple of really great guests on today’s show… I am going to highlight Monica Vila our first guest, she represented the LAW side of our special show!

Dave and I had fun today with the format of having parents and teens and their relationships compared to the very successful TV drama called Law & Order… So, Make suere to listen to Monica’s interview below:

When asked Monica gave us some great tips (7 good computer security habits) for keeping our families & children safe online!

1. Lock your computer when you are not using it. Even if you are away from your computer for just a few moments, your data could be compromised. Close your computer and make sure the screen locks.

2. Disconnect from the Internet. Most broadband connections allow us to stay permanently connected to the Internet, but this convenience comes with risks. The chances of your computer being attacked is much higher if you are always connected. This is particularly true if you are using your computer at home without an adequate firewall.

3. Adjust your security settings. The Windows XP, Windows 7, and Mac OS operating systems all have multiple security settings, as do the popular browsers like Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox. Make sure the settings are appropriate for your computer and are adjusted for each individual user.

4. Check for security patches and software updates. Microsoft and other popular operating systems offer regular updates and software patches to protect against viruses and security flaws. Make sure your computer regularly checks for updates or visit the appropriate web page to get the latest download. (Windows users can get security updates here.)

5. Change your passwords. Change your passwords regularly, particularly for financially sensitive accounts and web sites. Don’t use the same password for multiple accounts. Do not keep a copy of all your passwords on your computer. It will be much harder to re-create or access accounts if data is lost.

6. Protect against power surges and outages. Computers are easily damaged by power surges. Make sure you are protected and consider disconnecting your computer during thunderstorms.

7. Back up your data. Set aside a few minutes a week to back up your files and personal data.

The Law:

Monica Vila Founder and Chief Technology Mom – Today’s children are exposed to a dizzying array of technology platforms and services that present endless possibilities…and more than a few problems. How do parents keep up with all the technology that is now second nature to their kids? How can parents make informed decisions about how their kids spend their time online and which tech devices and internet sites are appropriate? How can parents give their kids guidelines that should apply both inside and outside the home? Above all, how can parents keep their kids safe – protecting them from online dangers, whether it’s cyber-bullying, online predators, pornography or ID theft?

Monica’s career spans two decades of 3-dimensional consumer marketing that has allowed hundreds of clients to create strong brand connections with key demographics. For the last 15 years she has focused on consumer technology and is passionate about creating tech savvy communities – empowering families to make good decisions about their use of technology. Monica was previously PTA President at her daughter’s elementary school and is an active advocate of parents embracing technology by understanding both its benefits and risks.
Smart Phones Too Smart for Parents: News Organizations Say Children Are At Risk of Being Caught with Porn In Their Pocket

It started out like any other Tuesday morning. I was looking forward to the interview with Raj Goel, CISSP, an IT and information security expert with BrainLink, when I got a call from Dan Rascon KUTV 2 News. I had done my research and felt good about talking with Raj and hearing what he had to say.

Permit me to interject a personal comment, and I am sure Bill would echo the same. I would like to thank all our guests for sharing their time with our listeners and us. Another special thanks to Anissa Wardell, The Publicists Assistant, who is instrumental in co-coordinating our guests and promoting The CyberHood Watch, CHWradio. Here is the Press Release that caught the eye of KUTV 2 News, and Dan Rascon. The real beneficiaries are those who listen to the interviews. There is something for everyone and particularly those who are concerned about his or her digital life.

Back to the events of the day. I agreed to the interview with Dan Rascon, which was to take place towards the end of the show with Raj Goel; capturing the whole process on KURTV 2, what a wrap up. I love the events that take place behind the scene, the preparations, and enjoying the moment commenting to a larger audience.

In the video clip, Dan interviews Sariah Donnahoo, a behavioral analyst with The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. What is important about this piece about “sexting” being used as blackmail, “Sextortion” is the awareness KUTV 2 brings to the table. It is up to our readers to communicate this to those they care about.

The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill had the opportunity to interview Capt. Rhett McQuiston, ICAC-TF, however; the topic centered on child pornography and online predators. The digital age has certainly exacerbated many of the issues kept out at the edge of town and away from our children and families. The edge of town has moved into the home and is carried around in your kids back pocket, or purse. Raj referred to kids with smart phones like carrying around a loaded weapon. What parent would allow that?

Who is SafetyWeb?

SafetyWeb is the first service created by the very people who have created some of the biggest online services out there! Our founders have not only worked on web sites that combined service over 200 million registered users, but they have also assisted in the arrest and prosecution of sex offenders! Even if you are not concerned about online predators, bear in mind that everything that your child does online leaves a trail, a trail that universities and employers are likely to stumble upon. SafetyWeb counts amongst its founders an Ivy League graduate who conducts admission interviews for his alma mater. Conducting a Google search is one of many first steps partaken when he gets a new interview request from the school or is looking to hire a new employee.

Geoffrey is a smart, aggressive, scrappy, repeat entrepreneur with a solid reputation in the Valley. He has 12 years of successful product development. Prior to SafetyWeb.com, Geoffrey co-founded A Large Corporation, LLC with MC Hammer with the primary web property DanceJam. He raised 2 rounds of venture funds and sold the company to SportsNet in 2009. Geoffrey was also a founder of the social web browser Flock where he successfully built an organization from 2 employees to >30. He developed a product which has had over 8 million installs to date. Geoffrey has also held Product positions at Real Networks and Oracle and founded DAG.com.

Michael is one of only a handful of people in the world who has scaled a web service to over 100 million users. He has built infrastructure to support some of the biggest sites on the web including Photobucket and TinyPic. Prior to SafetyWeb, Michael was the first executive hire and architect at Photobucket and the platforms he scaled now accommodate > 100 million registered users with 8 billion images.

He built the development, operations, and customer support teams to keep up with the growth and helped lead Photobucket to a $300 million exit to NewsCorporation. Michael has also served as a senior solution engineer at NetApp, led the development of a solid state storage product for TiGi, built a telecom engineering organization at TouchAmerica, and helped build Citrix’s consulting services organization. He has over 15 years of direct experience building scalable systems.

the ONLINE MADDness of surfing the Internet and the mobile World Wide Web on Monday… or any other day of the week!

Here is a quick list of blog posts, containing the kind of maddness our children are dealing with daily:

Online Predators and Sexual Grooming: Keeping our Children Safe

The revelation this morning that the New Zealand Police have been contacted by American Authorities to track down the New Zealand victim of what is believed to be sexual grooming is a salient reminder that, while scams targeting our wallets are still prevalent, those most vulnerable to exploitation on the internet are our children.

Online Child Exploitation Across New Zealand (OCEANZ) was set up in October 2009 to proactively protect children from online sexual predators. They have been contacted by American authorities and will be vital in the prosecution of a 19 year old American man who used a web camera to communicate with a 14-year-old New Zealand girl. It is believed that the man is being charged with a crime similar to the New Zealand offence of sexual grooming. Sexual grooming, a growing threat throughout the world, is defined as setting up and preparing another person to be the victim of sexual abuse, and online grooming involves setting up an abusive situation via cyber-technologies such as the internet.

Keeping our Children Safe on Campus

As parents, the thought of sending our children off to college should be a glorious and happy thought. We all dream about the day that our sons’ or daughters’ announce their acceptance into college. We spend years preparing for the day. We weigh out the pros and the cons when choosing a school such as distance from home, curricular activities, which college best suites our child’s dreams for the future. However, do we ever consider safety? Is safety an issue when choosing a college? Disturbingly, yes it is. In today’s society, crime on college campus is at an all time high; more so for women.

It is reported that: 1 out of every 4 women will be assaulted sexually on school campus.

1 out of every 8 women will be raped during their transition through college.

I am sure this is startling news for most parents. So, what can we do as parents to insure the safety of our children?

Cyber Safety: Keeping our children safe in the CyberWorld

More and more of our students are texting, instant messaging, webcasting, Twittering, and using YouTube and Facebook.

Do you know … what they are posting? what they are viewing? Where your children are in the cyberworld? The INTERNET SAFETY STRATEGIES FOR STUDENTS? the TOP 10 THINGS PARENTS MUST DO to protect our children?

Some quick facts:
• 53% of students enter chat rooms and 85% use Instant Messaging
• 1 in 5 children between the ages of 10-17 have been solicited inappropriately online. In 15% of those cases, the predator attempted to meet in person.
• 89% of the solicitations of kids were made in chat rooms or Instant messages.
• 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 10 boys were exploited before they reach adulthood.

Come learn/share together and help protect and guide our tech-savy generation of children.

They may call it Chat Roulette, but it’s more like a “Peeping Tom meets Voyeurism” on steroids.

At any time, there could be as many as 30,000 people worldwide clicking the next tab to connect with the “next” person wanting to chat (shah-right) on Chat Roulette. Do you think their might be concern for under age kids exposed to inappropriate behaviors? Do you think law enforcement is concerned? Do you think we just took three steps back in the fight against online predators and pedophiles?

The site was developed by a 17 year old from Russia, and was launched in November of last year. Chat Roulette is now getting approximately 1.5 million visitors per day!

WARNING!!! This site is not for kids!

This Is Nothing To What I Could Have Shown You...

Last night, I decided to take a lOOk. I guess many others are looking as well – I had the cover on my cam – I’m a bit uncomfortable allowing eyeballs in my personal home space. However, I can tell you for certain there were many who were not shy to expose their “private space”.

There is no registering or anything to fill out – Just type in the website address…Total Anonymity! Oh yeah, it says you should be 16 and nothing obscene – wink – wink.

There is no way children who catch wind of this are not going to be curious about the buzz, and then add a bit of peer pressure (it won’t take much) and more and more of that “Age of Innocence” that should be naturally lost, which Bill and I refer to as finding out there is no Santa Clause, then suddenly years of innocence are gouged from an unsuspected child. Now, more than ever parents should monitor their child’s online activities and prevent them from accessing sites of this nature.

I came across a pretty creative video that explains more about Chat Roulette. Anyone who is responsible for a child needs to be aware of this and take appropriate measures to assure they do not get on this site. Moreover, it is not just about the obscenities, it’s about making real live interactive contact with some serious groomers with the most deceptive warm and genuine smiles.

Chat Roulette:
