Eric L. Howes | GFI | on CHWradio | Parent-Teen Internet Safety Study

GFI Software uncovers the digital relationship between parents, teenagers, and the Internet in their recent study, Parent-Teen Internet Safety Study.

Personally, I am grateful when industry leaders like GFI take the initiative and try to gain a better understanding of the “human behaviors” behind the actions that can have a profound effect on all us.

“I never thought this would happen to me”, a phrase heard often especially throughout the nearly four-hundred interviews on CHWradio.

Although the study focused on education practices relative to internet safety, the study also includes three major risk areas:

Content – The sites and other content teens visit, and parental activity around monitoring and regulating those activities.

Communications – Particularly relative to bullying and “stranger danger,” the survey sought to identify the risk teens face from unwanted and unsolicited communication over the Internet.

Malware – Family practices relative to protecting home and portable business computers from viruses, Trojans, worms, and other malware variants.

As a side note: in the later section, under communications, the phrase “stranger danger”, which was first coined by Nancy McBride, National Safety Director, for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and wishes she had never done so. The reason for Nancy’s change of mind is simple, too often the victim knows the predator and/or pedophile…They are not a stranger. Unfortunately, kids are taught to look outside his or her group of familiar faces, rather than run or shout at the familiar faces acting inappropriately.

I’ve mentioned this before, but it interesting to note that many leaders in personal online security seem to be early adopters, a website presence, recognition of a looming problem, and a personal involvement to provide a solution.

Eric is another example of my later statement. Before joining GFI (then Sunbelt Software) Eric taught for a number of years at both the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Parkland College in Champaign, IL.

Eric L. Howes is best known in the anti-spyware community for his testing and reviews of anti-spyware software, including so-called “rogue anti-spyware,” at SpywareWarrior. He also maintains a personal website to supply Internet users with resources to protect their privacy and security on the Internet.

GFI's Eric L. Howes Visits CHWradio | Dave & Bill

Eric, as well as many of our past guests, is genuinely concerned with the security, safety, and well-being of the community. GFI’s Parent-Teen Internet Safety Study discovered that there exist a substantial number of parents and teens are both engaged in highly risky online behavior in the home.

Another interesting point is the idea of treating internet education with the same fervor as the education of sex, drugs, and alcohol with the understanding that the potential ramifications of improper use of the Internet can be as devastating if not learned.

It may not seem like an aha moment, but as the study puts it…It is a cat and mouse game. The Internet is a still a new frontier begging for new discoveries, and kids are kids and will test the limits. The unfortunate side to this are parents fall short and need to be more responsible in his or her child’s digital education…”human behavior” is the weak link. Industry security leaders, like GFI take care of the technical challenges and solutions for securing us. The “human behavior” element needs to install, implement, update, and use the technology.

Interesting, with bullying being such an important issue, and 34% of teens admitting to have said things online that they wouldn’t say in person and only 4% admitting to bullying, and 11% admitting being bullied…where are all the bullies?

Ninety-four percent (94%) of parents say they counsel teens on internet safety. I guess the question I have is what are they talking about? What do you as a parent consider important topics to cover about Internet Safety?

Eric L Howes provided our CHWradio listeners a great deal of insight to help narrow the digital gap between teens – parents – and schools.

Be sure to download the show for later listening…Mobile devices are the new frontier. Who is there to teach your family the how-to of best practices?

With more than 600 million users worldwide, Facebook is without a doubt the number one social networking Web site on the map. While these statistics demonstrate Facebook's popularity, these figures really only mean one thing to hackers and cyberspace crooks: Facebook is nothing more than the perfect feeding ground to steal careless users' sensitive information via spamming and clickjacking. This is exactly why Facebook attempted to spruce up its user protection by joining forces with internet safety browsing tool Web of Trust (WTO) in late May.

While the congruence with WOT helps prevent users from clicking malicious outbound links that seduce users with promotions like "click here to win a free Kindle," Facebook users who download the free Web of Trust Add-on (which is available for all major web browsers) are simply only given a "warning" of risky links.
With more than 600 million users worldwide, Facebook is without a doubt the number one social networking Web site on the map. While these statistics demonstrate Facebook’s popularity, these figures really only mean one thing to hackers and cyberspace crooks: Facebook is nothing more than the perfect feeding ground to steal careless users’ sensitive information via spamming and clickjacking. This is exactly why Facebook attempted to spruce up its user protection by joining forces with internet safety browsing tool Web of Trust (WTO) in late May.

While the congruence with WOT helps prevent users from clicking malicious outbound links that seduce users with promotions like “click here to win a free Kindle,” Facebook users who download the free Web of Trust Add-on (which is available for all major web browsers) are simply only given a “warning” of risky links. That means it doesn’t necessarily guarantee protection. If fact, nothing can guarantee protection. However there are ways to reduce risks. To learn 3 additional (yet simple) ways to safeguard your Facebook browsing experience while using WOT, continue reading below.

1. Secure Web Channel. First and foremost you want to ensure that your web channel is secured. You should use the HTTPS protocol (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) at all times. This protocol encrypts information while it is in transit so that malicious hackers cannot so easily read/obtain the information. To put it into better perspective, it’s almost as if your Facebook message or comment (which may hold sensitive information) is a handwritten letter and the protocol is a seal-tight envelope. The idea is that only the intended recipient can open the envelope. To check if you are already using https simply go to your Facebook profile page and look at the address bar. It should read: “https://www.facebook.com/”; note that the “s” needs to be included. If it reads http://www.facebook.com without the “s” then it is not secured. To change to a secure protocol, go to my account>settings>account security> and check the box that says secure browsing (https).

2. Always Log-out when Not in Use. Not only does leaving your account logged on for several hours while you are away from the computer make it easy for friends and family members to create “fake” and typically harmless status updates, but it also makes it easy for malicious hackers to steal your info and forge click jacking. So log out—even if doing so means you’ll have to take a few extra seconds to retype your log-in information and password.

3. Upgrade Browser. Lastly, you want to make sure that you have the latest version of the browser that you use. This is because with each new update, web browsers typically increase their levels of protection, including those that deal with spamming and clickjacking.

One of the first things I do on my computer is to access our bank account and review our statement. I guess it’s lucky that I do this every morning because today I immediately saw three suspicious transactions that had occurred around 6:30 a.m this morning. They took place in California; two of them at 7-Eleven stores. In California! We live in Kentucky and I have never even been to California. These transactions were made using my husband’s ATM/Debit card number… Read more

Well, Megan Morgan, of Enough-is-Enough asked if we would be willing to post about “The Perfect Storm”, a short four minute video that highlights the risks tweens and teens face online. The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill are happy to share EIE’s video. Moreover, The Perfect Storm also enlightens parents and helps to dispel the false impressions about thinking it won’t happen to you, or that would never happen to my child.

Because kids are not in school during the summer, they have more time to use the computer. Consequently, you need to make sure your kids’ summertime cyber experiences are positive. To help you, we’ve created a simple acronym as a guidepost for steps you can take and tactics you can implement to protect your children from online dangers.

And what acronym did we pick? Well, we picked SUMMER. Go figure!

Set clear expectations and establish an ongoing dialogue- Before the computer even gets turned on, you can make a positive impact on your child’s Internet safety. When parents talk regularly with their kids about the Internet, kids demonstrate fewer risky behaviors while online. Plan a time when you can have a conversation with your kids and discuss expectations for use of the computer this summer. Spend time with your child online and create an atmosphere of trust. Encourage your children to make good decisions, and temper your reactions when they run into danger.

To ensure you and your child understand the expectations, together review and sign the cyber safety youth pledge.

Understand the need for cyber safety and implement Rules N’ Tools SM on all Internet enabled devices- It’s the beginning of summer, and implementing the tactics in this article is a great start to ensuring your child’s summer is not tainted by accidental pornography viewing, cyberbullying or predation. However, sometimes it’s hard to make good intentions last all through the summer. I’ve learned that if I am to follow through with my good intentions, I need to understand what makes my intentions all that good in the first place.

So here’s what I recommend: Go through the four part Internet Safety 101 SM ,DVD teaching series and the Rules N’ Tools SM Booklet. Next, I would recommend printing out the Rules N’ ToolsSM ,checklist and posting it in a place you will see it frequently, like on the refrigerator. Take five minutes each day to review the checklist.

As you view the four part Internet Safety 101 SM DVD teaching series and Rules N’ Tools SM Booklet, you will be educated, equiped and empowered with the knowledge and resources needed to protect your children from the online dangers of pornography, sexual predators, cyberbullies and risks related to social networking, online gaming and mobile devices.

It’s also important to use filtering technology that blocks inappropriate web sites. You can even set up time limits on your computer that will restrict endless, all-day access. It’s important you understand how to use these features and why these features are important.

When we more fully understand a danger, we are more likely to implement and follow through with practices that will keep us and our children protected from that danger.

Make sure you’re friends with your child on social networking sites – Be sure you, as the parent, are added to your child’s “friends list,” because if their profiles are set to private – as they should be – you will not be able to view any of your child’s information. If you are unsure whether your child has an online profile, conduct a simple online search.

With the excitement of summer in the air, your kids will likely engage in many fun-filled summertime activities. It’s likely that kids will bring cameras and cell phones to these events and then post pictures and videos from the events on social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace. If you’re not friends with your children on social networking sites, you may not be able to see these pictures or see what other things your children are posting online.

More importantly, you need to be friends with your kids online so you can see what other kids or adults post on your child’s social media profile or on YouTube. Kids’ online and offline lives have merged, and it’s important you not only know your child’s friends in real life but are also aware of their digital relationships.

Match computer time with quality time – Kids love spending time on the computer. But they also love spending time with you. Make sure you set technology time outs each day to spend with your kids doing something they enjoy. It doesn’t need to be an all day affair, but regular quality time will deepen your relationship with your child.

In a recent survey, teens who rated their relationship with their parent as positive were 20 percent less likely to seek online pornography than teens who rated their relationship with their parent as poor. Additionally, make sure your kids are spending quality face time with their friend and family members and engage in outdoor play.

Stanley Holditch has worked in Internet content management and marketing since 2002, and has been the Internet Marketing Manager for InternetSafety.com since April 2009 (InternetSafety.com was recently acquired by McAfee). Stanley is a father and is passionate about responsible online parenting and Internet safety. In short, Mr. Holditch believes that while the Internet certainly poses new challenges to parents and children, both parties must confront the challenges by mutual education, open communication, and using the right tools.

This tips list and many more great tools, are available on the InternetSafety.com website:

Internet Safety’s 5 Tips for Creating a Cybersafe Home™

This generation of parents is the first to face the challenge of helping our children make the most of their virtual space while keeping them safe in it. If you’re still getting your footing in virtual parenting, don’t worry. InternetSafety.com has the following tips to help ensure that your child’s online experience remains positive.

1. Become a net-savvy parent

The best safeguard against online dangers is being informed. Jump in and learn the basics of the Internet—read articles, take a class, and talk to other parents. A good place to start with some basics is www.LearnTheNet.com. A good place to stay current with the latest in online technology is mashable.com. You don’t have to be an expert to have a handle on your child’s online world.

2. “Chat” with your kids

Develop an open dialogue so that you can talk with your kids about the benefits and dangers of the Internet. Cultivate an interest in their online activities—their favorite Web sites, online games, and interests. And don’t be afraid to ask your children who they are talking to online and what they are talking about.

3. Agree on a game plan

Use the InternetSafety.com Gameplan™ to formally agree on your family’s guidelines for using the Internet. Post them near the family computer as a reminder. Ensure that your kids know to never share personal information on the Internet and that they should tell you about any online activity or contact that makes them uncomfortable.

4. Protect your computer

Take advantage of the software that exists to help parents manage their children’s computer experience. In only a few minutes, parental control software like Safe Eyes can block inappropriate websites, restrict the amount of time that your kids use the Internet and monitor their Instant Messenger chats to protect against predators.

5. Explore the Internet as a family

With a game plan and a protected computer, you can now encourage your family to take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer. Take a genuine interest in what your kids are doing and stay engaged with them online.

The analysis of tens of thousands of Safe Eyes software settings demonstrates that parents who take steps to control their children’s Internet access are concerned about far more than potential exposure to dirty words and X-rated images. The data shows that:

• The top non-sexual Web site categories blocked by Safe Eyes software users are hate/discrimination (38 percent), gambling (36 percent), murder/suicide (34 percent), drugs (32 percent), alcohol (29 percent) and violence (28 percent)
• Twenty-seven percent of users bar children’s access to Web sites that promote school cheating and plagiarism by providing term papers, written essays or exam answers
• Two users out of 10 choose to filter Internet TV shows with an MA (mature) rating, a newer option that is rapidly gaining adherents as more parents become aware that many TV shows forbidden in the family room are available online
• Fewer than 20 percent block chat and social networking websites, indicating the importance of these channels in a child’s social life despite concerns about cyberbullying and online predators. However, 83 percent choose to monitor instant message conversations as a means of protecting children from these dangers.

Virtually all Safe Eyes software users retain the software’s default settings to prevent children from accessing Web sites dealing with pornography, nudity, sex and tasteless/gross content. More than one-third also add other sex-related categories such as lingerie, swimsuits and adults-only to the blacklist by checking the filtering options on the software’s administrative menu.

“These numbers paint a picture of vigilant parents who understand that porn sites are not the only inappropriate content on the web. In fact, the hate/discrimination category is the most frequently blocked after sex-related topics, even though there has been relatively little focus on this area as it relates to children,” said Stanley Holditch, online safety expert for McAfee. “Clearly, parents are recognizing the power of Web filtering to assist them in protecting children from negative influences of all kinds, whether it’s nudity, racist rhetoric or the temptation to plagiarize.” [...]

Stanley gave one of the best answers ever to Dave’s 2 part questions, please listen to complete interview and also pay special attention to and take notes on the last few minutes… it’s great advise for all of us, especially parents everywhere
