Robin Sax Joins Dave & Bill on CHWR

Robin Sax dispels several misconceptions that just because you think an individual is an authority at what he or she does for a living, does not mean you do it better at home.

For example, ever met a contractor who builds and/or remodels beautiful homes, but their home is always under construction. How about Robin’s example, the shoe maker’s kid has no shoes, or her personal experience regarding her husband being an attorney who handles trusts and wills, but Robin and her husband will needs updating.

Robin understands we all make mistakes, even the best of us. Robin does not assume she is impervious to making a mistake with her children, even with her level of experience. What she makes clear is her ability to ask questions, and recognize when the answer is not quite all it might be. Robin also says she is not opposed to making it her business to know what her kids are doing…Investigate | Interrogate.

Two years ago, Robin Sax was our guest and we spent the time talking about child pornography and subjects most individuals try to avoid talking about. In the later interview, Robin said, parents need to be “tech savvy – Not tech paranoid”. Therefore, today instead of trying to ask questions we think might be pertinent, we asked Robin Sax to share with us what she felt important to her at this moment…Human Trafficking.

CHW Magazine Article on Robin Sax

Prior to this question, we talked about Robin’s publications, which sparked a discussion on the sad state of the publishing industry. Books are being drowned out with an overload of available information on the Internet, and the influence of social media. I mention this conversation because The CyberHood Watch will be releasing a book soon, “Think It Won’t Happen To You”.

“Think It Won’t Happen To You” is a compilation of three years of research and more than 250 interviews with authorities worldwide. We address seventeen steps to better digital parenting; it includes being mindful about Human Trafficking.

We are fortunate that an individual like Robin Sax is personally interested in this problem…Human slavery. It will take an individual like Robin to handle the likes of those who traffic other human beings.

It has taken law enforcement and the Justice System years to develop a mind shift from criminal to victims of human trafficking; many are children of prostitution, not criminals. Robin understands the traps these young girls have found themselves in with little or no chance of escape.

Today there are more human slaves than at any other time in history of the world. Moreover, a great deal of human trafficking happens right here in the U.S. and rural America. Unfortunately, the # 1 position for the destination of Human Trafficking is the U.S.A.

I said it once in a post awhile back, and Bill just reminded me about it the other day…”Shame on all of us”.

Robin brought up a point about how terminology needs to change. When you hear the phrase “human trafficking”, or “prostitute” to describe the events of a child is misleading. Kids cannot be prostitutes, they cannot legally enter into any contractual agreement, therefore; they are prostituted, not prostitutes. We have heard others address uses in terminologies, and the need to change our verbiage to describe certain issues that no longer prove helpful.

Listen to internet radio with Dave and Bill on Blog Talk Radio

Nancy McBride, National Safety Director for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who coined the phrase, “Stranger Danger”, and said during one of her visits on the CyberHood Watch Radio (CHWR) that she wished she could eradicate that term from the English language. The problem she recognized with the “Stranger Danger” was that the majority of child abuses were not from strangers, but family members and known adults.

One of the cornerstones of The CyberHood Watch is “Communication & Awareness” and again we hear how important that concept is in helping to prevent a negative impact on our children, families, and our society. Robin talks about the need for more communication about human trafficking. Hilary Clinton is creating an awareness regarding the tragedy of human trafficking, so the task begins with awareness and continues with finding the solutions. Unfortunately, the public has not learned to identify the sign s of human trafficking as they have with spousal, domestic, or child abuse.

It Is Somebody's Daughter

One of the biggest problems affecting the victims is that they do not identify themselves as victims, They know they are here illegally, afraid of being deported, guilty, threatened personally and their families in some cases, therefore; they do not say anything…Thinking they are criminals.

We talked about the use of RFID and/or geo tags to track the worst of the worst heinous offenders. What are your thoughts as you read this?

Other guests who have been on CHWR to talk about Human Trafficking have been Julian Sher who wrote, “Somebody’s Daughter” and the organization Soroptimist International, advocates for those caught up in the world of Human trafficking.

Emotions, naturally, run high among die-hard fans during sporting events. Fueled by alcohol and a losing score, those feelings can turn ugly and violent, especially when negative emotions get redirected toward intimate partners. How easy is it to forget that it is just a game?

What Was With The Three Field Goal Attempts?

The Utah and Pitts game Thursday is one that will be talked about for a long time. Okay, I confess, what took place with all the field goal attempts. Even the commentators, hosting the after show passed on trying to give that an explanation. Finally, the third field goal attempt put the game into overtime.

The number of mistakes were bountiful for both teams, Utah may have taken the lead there, but when it came to the glorious interception pass by Utah freshman Brian Blechen, which set up Joe Phillips for the “single” 21-yard field goal that gave the Utes a 27-24 victory against Pittsburgh, ranked No. 15, on Thursday night.

If it is difficult to understand what was behind the three field goal attempts, and American football has been around long enough to understand, so imagine the confusion surrounding living a safe & secure life in the digital age. The CyberHood Watch will explain and provide the solutions for living your digital life safely & securely, and the umpires can explain the calls…Both require authorities.

As The CyberHood Watch Partners, Dave & Bill, Picked Up Their Jaws - What Were They Thinking!

Greg Reber On CHWradio

Several years ago, I wrote an article on, “Internet Security vs. Internet Insecurity”, which addresses the end-user and their reluctance to accept the practice of security over convenience.

I guess it could be likened to driving an automatic transmission versus the option of a manual transmission. However, if you have ever been stuck in snow or mud, you will understand the advantages of a manual transmission. I can’t argue it is more convenient to drive an automatic, however, what if it was less safe to drive, and you or a family member were at a greater risk of an accident driving an automatic? Would it be worth the extra effort to drive a manual to keep you and your family safer?

I cannot imagine the extra efforts, the additional multiple steps, or making your life a little more complex could possibly outweigh the security benefits. Considering the bigger picture, I would venture a guess that the additional inconvenience would not cost you more than an additional thirty-to-sixty more minutes in the course of a year. How much more complex is your life because of a few extra clicks of a mouse or filling in a few additional fields. Complacency is what cybercriminals count on.

With your permission, allow me a little self-promoting on behalf of The CyberHood Watch. With more frequency, our guests are more vocal about commenting on the importance and contribution that The CyberHood Watch provides our digital citizens. Greg also expressed his appreciation for our method of education through communication and awareness, which is what he alluded to regarding financial institutions and their need to reach their customers. Authorities are expressing their appreciation for The CyberHood Watch efforts…Thank you.

Greg Reber President Of AsTech Consulting Meets The CyberHood Watch Partners, Dave & Bill

Greg Reber, President of AsTech Consulting, points out those financial institutions need to educate their customers, and not passively with the typical opt-in to read another white paper. Financial institutions need to get more creative about educating their customers, which is in their best interest, regarding the risks of online financial transactions. It is about getting the idea into main street media not technical or industry publications.

An inherent problem with the current system of financial institutions is when a breech occurs; the bank will commonly reimburse the customer their losses. This action only exacerbates the problem because there is no incentive for the customer to improve their security or culpability if applicable. In addition, there is no feedback for the customer as to how, or why the breech happened, and more importantly how it can be circumvented from happening again.

It really is somewhat of a catch-22 for the financial institutions. If a bank were to impose, additional security measures, and their competitors do not; the most likely outcome will be customers leaving for less security and more convenience.

What we may see is a consortium of institutions, like the Payment Card Industry, coming together to require best practices of their customers.
Greg poses a great question for all of us regarding Identity Theft, which is, “Is it getting better or worse”? Greg says to look at the matrix, money being moved is growing, and breeches are growing. This seems to be a good indicator it is not working and the need for more customer participation as responsible cybercitizens.

Greg’s story about a bank sending out an email to its business customers with a link requesting personal account information was a jaw-dropper for both, Dave & Bill. The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, believe that a bank or financial institution would never ever request personal account information. That was one practice thought to be carved in stone! Not so!

A bank did send out an email, with a link requesting customers personal account information. What were they thinking? Sure enough, the cybercriminals jumped on this with duplicate “phishing” sites with links taking the customers to fake sites, which gathered their personal banking information. Needless to say, this one is in the courts. What is absurd is the bank holds the position the customer is at fault, because they should have known better.

This one will be decided in the courts, who was responsible? Here is a personal thought, if the court rules in favor of the financial institution that the customer should have known better, what do you think the chances are any financial institution will reimburse future credit card losses? You should have known better will be your reimbursement. My suggestion to all customers is to start making a few more mouse clicks and filling in a few more boxes to make sure you are secure in your digital world. We can do more for ourselves than relying on corporate to do it for us. What do you think? Come by the CHW Community and share your thoughts…They will benefit us all.

What does it mean to be RESPONSIBLE??

Having a capacity for moral decisions and therefore accountable, and is capable of rational thought or action, within one’s power & control. Take Responsibility and… STOP the MADDness!

Being A Responsible CyberCitizen – Is Your Right & Responsibility

The Internet is a Big Deal, and we all have certain rights and duties if we chose to participate as members of the Internet. It is that simple, if you are a member of the Internet, then you are responsible for your children, and your family’s safety online and offline, which begins in understanding what and who you are up against. Consumers can no longer blindly assume they are protected because a commercial tells them they are safe – sorry, that is misleading and simply is not the case.

After many years of research and many notable guests on just what is important to keep our children and their family’s safe on and offline. The CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, have recognized a merging trend in the overall belief of what is necessary to keep families safe on and offline. Families should be aware that although technology and security software plays a vital role in the safety of your family’s online activities, it should be remembered it is only one part of the equation.

I wish we could claim some Nobel breakthrough, and be the first to announce a universal solution to the world on CHWradio, but the fact is – the other key element in addition to enterprise grade technologies, is simply good old fashion parenting, and teaching children the lost art of civility. Yes, the technology is new, and a bit out of control, which makes it more difficult, but not only can you do it, you have to do it – you are the parent.

Listen to any of our guests and you will realize, Dave & Bill have assembled an outstanding group of notable authorities worldwide. Each guest is a respected individual in his or her perspective field willing to share their years of insight for the benefit our listeners. Listeners become responsible cybercitizens empowered through the communication & awareness by authorities willing to share his or her wisdom with every guest.

You want a little more in depth and personal insight and/or knowledge of how to be a Responsible CyberCitizen, then click here… and JOIN US! by David C. Ballard

Being Responsible Shows Character by Ron Kurtus (18 April 2001)

A person who does as promised can be considered as reliable. Reliability is an admirable characteristic. People don’t like to deal with those who are unreliable. They’d rather give their business and rewards to the person they can count on. Also, the reliable person feels good knowing that he or she is trusted.

HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE PERSON (AND FEEL GREAT!)

When you agree to do something, do it. If you let people down, they’ll stop believing you. When you follow through on your commitments, people take you seriously.

Answer for your own actions. Don’t make excuses or blame others for what you do. When you take responsibility for your actions you are saying “I am the one who’s in charge of my life.”

Take care of your own matters. Don’t rely on adults to remind you when you’re supposed to be somewhere or what you’re supposed to bring. You take the responsibility.

What Does it Mean to Be Responsible?

Family Responsibility

As an individual living alone, there is only you to look out for and make sure your needs are satisfied. With a family, however, the requirement to be responsible increases dramatically. A child requires lots and lots of assistance, from getting nutritious food to going to school to learning how to be accountable for his actions. A responsible parent teaches her child how to behave and also makes sure basic needs of her children are met, even before her own at times. An irresponsible parent may leave a child home alone for long stretches of time after school or not assist them with healthy meals or homework.

If you are childless, your family responsibility can still lie with assisting a sibling or parent in need or even caring for a pet.

Here is Digital Dave’s description: Asked and Answered

This question you’ll hear Digital Dave asking everyone is and now has become a part of our branding for The CyberHood Watch is, “What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Responsible CyberCitizen?” The CyberHood Watch, as well as Bill and I, believe that “Responsible CyberCitizens” will be a corner stone in the wall of defense for the safety of our children and their families and their Internet’s safety.

So, Digital Dave asked Deputy Chief, Kirk Torgensen of Utah and he sees the Internet like most of us, a great tool with almost endless possibilities. Unfortunately, for Kirk, he’s directly involved with the nefarious underworld and the scourge inflicted on the Internet. Like CHWradio.com, “…one of the goals in the Attorney General’s Office is to really get out and talk to people about how not to fall prey to different things on the Internet”. Another trait of a responsible cybercitizen is communication with your children, another common thread echoed by previous guests. Awareness is another common thread portrayed by responsible cybercitizens and needed to empower you and your children’s online and offline safety.

Parents need to be responsible cybercitizens and educate themselves and learn what not to allow your children to do on the Internet and not setting themselves up as a target for unwanted activity. Parents are busy and kids are left alone and when a member of your family or your child becomes a victim… suddenly you have time?

Ins@fe celebrates Safe Internet Day - Where Were You? - Find out why it's your turn and what you need to do...I Post 4 Digital Safety.

February 9th, 2010 is Safe Internet Day. Why was I not aware of that until now? After all, I spend most my waking hours researching and writing about how to keep children, families, and businesses safe in the Digital Age. Which made me stop and think, what more could The CyberHood Watch partners do to help everyone enjoy the Internet safely.

After all when you consider “Safe Internet Day” and their goal, it seems to follow what many of CHWradio guests have echoed many many times, and that is Communication – Communication – Communication and Awareness are important attributes to enjoy the Internet safely.

The more often we share and integrate our personal life experiences as parents with our children the better our children’s understanding of how to behave wisely both on the Internet and digital mobile devices. The more we communicate, the more we empower children to make better-informed decisions in the digital age.

I was going through a mental list of what The CyberHood Watch partners could do, when I realized it is not so much what we can do, but more of what each reader can do if the CyberHood Watch partners, Dave & Bill, will provide the platform. That is to take a moment, and either ask a question, or share a digital tip about keeping our children, families, and/or businesses safe on the Internet.

If you want to know about something, the Internet is a great source of discovering and uncovering the information to help make an informed decision. We spent the last two (2) years researching, as well as interviewing, more than a hundred (100) authorities worldwide on CHWradio who shared their experiences and years of wisdom on how to keep our kids, families, and businesses safe in the digital age.

CHWradio Supports Safe Internet Day

Through our research and interviews, we discovered many issues threatening the safety of our children, families, and businesses. The CyberHood Watch partners highlighted seventeen of the top concerns addressing all of us in a downloadable book titled, “Think It Won’t Happen To You”. We had offered the book free to Costco members when The CyberHood Watch became the Costco Business of the Month for January. We will continue the free download in celebration of “Safe Internet Day”

CyberHood Watch Supports Safe Internet Day

As I mentioned earlier, a particular beneficial piece of advice that surfaced frequently during our interviews was Awareness. Parents and guardians should be aware of his or her child’s online activities, and understand how the Internet and the digital age socially integrate into your child’s everyday life. A second piece of advice is Communication. Communicating early with your child about what he or she may encounter on the Internet or through their digital media devices they now carried in their pockets or purses. Moreover, communicating with your child an assurance there is always a trusted adult, who he or she can approach without being judged when there is a problem is vital. The number one reason kids do not tell is they are afraid of losing computer privileges.

Therefore, The CyberHood Watch would like to enter a tip offered by “ins@fe” and their topic for 2010 is “Think B4 U post!” This is what started me thinking what we could do to join ins@fe to come up with something for Safe Internet Day.

Write…1 Post 4 Digital Safety (question or tip) in the comment box below. Communicate your ideas so others will become aware…It empowers.

PS: I did know it was Safe Internet Day…Just had another post I need to do, and posting this one late.
