Google, China, Censorship & Hacking…Oh My!

by dballard on January 20, 2010

This is the biggest security story of the new decade and is yet to be determined if Google will stop censoring its search engine results in China. It seems that attempts have been made to hack into the Gmail accounts of human rights activists.

Even the US government has taken notice. US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called on Beijing to explain the attacks. Hillary’s statement said, “We have been briefed by Google on these allegations, which raise very serious concerns and questions. We look to the Chinese government for an explanation. The ability to operate with confidence is critical in a modern society and economy. I will be giving an address next week on the centrality of internet freedom in the 21st century, and we will have further comment on this matter as the facts become clear.”

Google, China, and all the powers to be will deal with the problem, but what about the weak link in the system that allowed China too allegedly hack Google.

It seems the new zero day vulnerability in Internet Explorer was China’s access to Google.

Therefore, maybe for the rest of us we should be mindful about what needs to be done to keep our little corner of our world safe from the same vulnerability. By the way, Internet Explorer may have been the China’s open door to Google, but Adobe Reader and Acrobat maybe more concern for end users like The CyberHood Watch partners and the rest of the CHW families.

If any of your children are online or anyone that you care about for that matter, then you are a Cyber Parent or Cyber Grandparent with new added responsibilities. Ouch! No one enjoys hearing that, another responsibility, as if parenting is not challenging enough, we now have to become cyber parents, grandparents, or educators.

Personally, Bill & I subscribe to a service that maintains our PCs. We are authorities on keeping children, families, and businesses safe in the digital age and our IT security authorities are good at taking care of their end; making sure they are there to fix any of our security problems and/or resolve any computer issues.

However, if you are comfortable of maintaining your own computer security then make sure all your patches are current and pay special attention to Adobe Reader and Acrobat immediately. You can find more about the security bulletin patches and download here and/or here:
